UNDP Leadership on MDGs
So far, Bhutan has had significant progress on achieving the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets especially in enhancing sustainable access to sanitation and safe drinking water and halving the under-weight children under five children years of age. Bhutan has also been able to successfully control malaria and tuberculosis.
UNDP's work in Bhutan has largely been focussed on poverty reduction, envinronment and disaster management, governance, education and health. It has been achieved through facilitation of policy advice and capacity building for pro-poor growth, integrated poverty reduction and mainstreaming environment and disaster risk reduction into national and local development planning.
The MDGs were instrumental in Bhutan's graduation from being a Least Developed Country and has helped prioritize time-bound targets to address extreme poverty by mobilizing global committment to improve human lives.
