    UNDP Making Strides on Projects in Flood-Affected Areas

    The UNDP continues to provide recovery and relief in many of the flood-affected municipalities in Serbia, that suffered extensive damage in May.

    The Romanian government, through UNDP, supports recovery from floods in municipalities of Kladovo, Majdanpek and Negotin

    The new project funded by the Romanian government, which will be implemented by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will support the rehabilitation of municipal sewage and water supply systems, cleaning of individual wells and other facilities important for the safe and secure water supply in municipalities of Kladovo, Majdanpek and Negotin. These municipalities are still recovering from the damages caused to communal systems and individual wells during this year's devastating floods.

    EUROPEAN HIV TESTING WEEK

    The UNDP in Serbia in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Q-Club NGO will be expanding VCT (for “Voluntary Counseling and Testing”) for HIV during the European HIV Testing week. The campaign will be held the week of Nov. 24-28. This year, the focus will be on university students, as testing will be offered on college campuses in 8 cities and towns throughout the country together with a promotional campaign through social media.

    UNDP Showcases Progress for New Homes of Flood Victims

    The UNDP in Serbia welcomed Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and HE Ambassador Juma Rashid Al Dhaheri of the United Arab Emirates to Krupanj, to inspect the progress of new homes that are being built under the supervision of the UNDP. The UNDP is nearing the completion of its project for 17 homes to be constructed for families who lost their homes in the historic floods of May. The project is financed by the Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation of the United Arab Emirates.

    Workshop on hygiene and healthcare to improve living conditions for Roma in Novi Pazar settlement

    A community workshop on hygiene and health care with 33 Roma children was organized on 1st November in Blazevo settlement in Novi Pazar. School-aged children participated in various tasks during the day, addressing hygiene and health issues in their environment. This is just one in a series of workshops aimed at improved living conditions of Roma in this settlement.

    The United Nations celebrates its 69th anniversary

    The United Nations Country Team in Serbia celebrated today the 69th anniversary of entry into force of the United Nations Charter in 1945 at Mikser House. The celebration was hosted by Mr. Ivica Dačić, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Republic of Serbia, Irena Vojačkova – Sollorano, the UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia and Mr. Peter N. Due, the Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UN Office in Belgrade.

    The City of Pancevo Holds its First Public Hearing Session

    The town assembly of Pancevo has held its first public hearing, as part of an effort to improve the oversight and the performance of the local government. The initiative, under the supervision of UNDP, makes Pancevo only the second local government in Serbia to hold such hearings.

    UNDP SERBIA COMMITS TO INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR ELIMINATING POVERTY

    UNDP Serbia is reasserting its commitment to act against extreme poverty, as the UN observes International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. In his message to mark the occasion, UN Sec. General Ban Ki-Moon said the UN would “think, decide and act together against extreme poverty—and plan for a world where no-one is left behind.”

    UNDP CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RURAL WOMEN: A STEP FOR DEVELOPMENT

    UNDP Serbia celebrates the International Day of Rural Women as the UN marks this occasion to acknowledge the role that rural women can make in global development. UN Sec.-General Ban Ki-Moon in his message recalls how his mother lived her entire life in the countryside, without much education. ’ I grew up appreciating her wisdom, resilience and intelligence. In the course of my subsequent public service, I came to see that these qualities are shared by millions of rural women around the world.”

    UNDP IN SERBIA CELEBRATES TRANSPARENCY AWARD FOR UNDP

    The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been recognized as the most transparent development organization worldwide, according to a newly released global ranking. The 2014 Aid Transparency Index recognized UNDP for its "commendable performance" in publishing information beyond international standards this year, placing it first out of 68 major agencies evaluated around the world.

    UNDP Makes Protected Areas Fun for Hiking - A Step for Sustainable Development

    UNDP Serbia is helping Serbia to provide more sustainability to its protected areas by promoting greater use of its natural treasures for tourists locally and from abroad. The opening of hiking trails in these areas is part of that effort. Through the GEF funded project “Ensuring financial sustainability of the protected area system of Serbia”, UNDP has launched pilot activities, to increase the development of nature-based tourism and self-sufficiency of non-timber forest resources in four national parks and six other protected areas. In addition, the UNDP project is meant to improve the accessibility of protected areas to enable people with disabilities to enjoy nature while learning about the environment.

    Construction of Houses in Krupanj, Obrenovac and Valjevo has started

    UNDP is currently constructing housing units in Obrenovac, Krupanj and Valjevo, in cooperation with the Government Office for Reconstruction and Flood Relief. A total of 35 housing units, 14 in Obrenovac, 17 in Krupanj and 4 in Valjevo will be constructed on municipality land plots. Standard houses are 60, 80 and 100 square meters.

    UN Global Compact Event

    Serbia’s Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the UN in Serbia held a conference to acknowledge the role of Serbian companies in response to the historic floods in May that caused unprecedented damage to Serbian towns and cities. After more than 4 months of recovery efforts the Serbian government is working with Serbian companies to rebuild affected municipalities in which more than 40,000 people were left homeless or had damaged homes, in addition to extensive damage that was done to property and the environment.

    UNDP Celebrates “Our Streets, Our Choice” for EMW in Belgrade

    UNDP in Serbia celebrated European Mobility Week (EMW) with the city of Belgrade and the EU delegation to Serbia on Saturday, Sept. 20, as cyclists staged a rally from the heart of the city and schoolchildren displayed drawings of the “green” Belgrade they want to live in. As part of a campaign throughout Europe to encourage local authorities to promote sustainable transport, and to encourage the public to use alternatives to cars, Belgrade joined hundreds of cities and towns to mark this annual event. The UN Resident Coordinator in Serbia Irena Vojackova-Sollorano appeared with the UN partners, Belgrade city authorities and the EU delegation representative to Serbia Jose Gomez, to congratulate winners of the nationwide drawing contest and to promote cycling, highlighting this year’s theme, “Our streets, our choice”.

    Serbia ranks 77 out of 187 countries in Human Development Index

    Levels in human development continue to rise in Serbia according to the latest Human Development Index (HDI) made public today on the occasion of the launch of the Human Development Report by UNDP Administrator Helen Clark in Tokyo.
