The City of Good Hosts
From 3 to 6 October, Novi Pazar, Sjenica and Tutin are hosts to more than 200 kids from 11 elementary schools from Belgrade, Kragujevac, Novi Sad and Vranje.
The gathering was organized yesterday in Novi Pazar. In a friendly atmosphere, schoolchildren met each other and went to watch a theater play prepared for them by the local actors.
During their stay, the kids will not be accommodated in hotels. They will sleep and eat in their peers’ families. With this activity, UNDP wanted to bring back a tradition of schoolchildren exchange that used to be a practice until late 1980s. The intention is to build friendships and trust between ethnically mixed children and to expose them to different cultures and customs. Besides, UNDP promotes a healthy lifestyle and a number of sport tournaments in football, basketball, volleyball as well as orienteering and trekking in Mokra gora will be organized.
Youth Office from Novi Pazar is managing the initiative. Dozens of volunteers from South West Serbia are also taking part in implementation and the relevant local institutions are engaged to take care of children’s’ safety. The return visits are planned for 2014.
The “City of Good Host” is organized as part of the UN joint project “Improving Human Security in South West Serbia”, implemented by four UN agencies: UNDP, UNOPS, WHO and UNFPA. The initiative is a continuation of well-attended week of cultural events "Strength of Diversity”, which took place in August in Novi Pazar.
