UNDP in Serbia handed over the IT equipment worth over 3,000 EUR to the City of Zrenjanin. The equipment  will be used for enhancing innovative means of communication such as Twitter and other social media, as well as for citizens’ participation in the work of the local Assembly.

“The first public hearing on Draft Strategy for Sustainable Development of the City of Zrenjanin 2014-2020 will be held on 24 June 2014. On this occasion I would like to invite all citizens, interested parties and organizations to participate in person or watch the live streaming.  Please forward your comments and proposals via social networks primarily Twitter which will be open during the hearing”, said the President of the Assembly of Zrenjanin, Mr. Radovan Bulajić.

“Zrenjanin is the first assembly to pilot a public hearing at the local level. The activity is part of  UNDP’s project and envisages support to the improvement of citizens' participation in the work of the local assemblies. For that purpose, UNDP donated the equipment for innovative forms of communication, such as Twitter and other social media. Introducing these catalytic changes in a society contributes to accelerating social and economic development. Public hearings allow wider consultation process ensuring public participation and social accountability. Technological development sets the pace of decision-making when it comes to addressing an issue in a short time with widest consultation”, said Biljana Ledenican, UNDP Portfolio Manager for Parliamentary Development.

The activity is part of “Strengthening the Oversight Function and Transparency of the Parliament” project, implemented by UNDP and the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and funded by the Swiss Development Coopeartion.
