Sep 22, 2016

Many business people from Belgrade marked the World Car Free Day by participating in the competition entitled Samo ne autom (engl. Just not by Car). A total of 450 employees from 35 companies / organizations took part in this challenge and left their cars in the parking lot while opting to walk or cycle to work – and at the same time help protect the environment.

This competition was organized for the first time in Belgrade by cycling associations Bajsologija and Ulice za bicikle, supported by Heinrich Böll Foundation and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as part of the European Mobility Week, with a goal to mobilize the corporate sector to turn, at least for a day, to sustainable means of transportation, and help protect the environment and reduce traffic.

Some of the companies that took part in the challenge include Vojvodjanska Bank, Delta Holding, Seven Bridges, Erste Bank a.d, Endava, Lumina Images, Centar for Modern Skills, Vip Mobiles, Exterior Solutions d.o.o, The City of Belgrade, IGT Beograd, SR Technics, Humanity d.o.o, MSG Global Solutions South East Europe d.o.o, Finbet, Nature Protection Institute of Serbia, EMRIC, Erste Bank a.d, Digikom, P3, UniCredit bank, Web Lab agency, Arriva Litas doo, TV Studio B, Transport high school, Public Utility Company Belgrade Waterworks and Sewage, Riznica bookstore and gallery, B92 Foundation, MCF MegaCom Fim, Blic, Seavus, school Sava Sumanovic.

Deputy Resident Representative at UNDP Serbia, Ms Steliana Nedera, said that it is encouraging to see such a large number of participants, and invited business people to include walking and cycling to work into their daily routines because it is “clean, safe, healthy and fast”.

That Belgraders have ten more reasons to cycle to work was confirmed by the Belgrade Mayor, Mr. Sinisa Mali who noted that in the past year Belgrade had built new cycling tracks covering 10 more kilometres. The Mayor, and City Architect, Mr. Milutin Folic, “walked the talk” this morning and set a good example by cycling to work.

The awards for the highest scoring and most ecologically aware employees and teams will be distributed on Tuesday, September 27, at the Airport City Belgrade avenue.
