A Step Closer towards Better Roads and Water Supply System in ŠidOct 21, 2016
Šid, October 21, 2016 – UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Irena Vojáčková-Sollorano and First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan to Republic of Serbia, Mr. Masyoshi Yamato, handed over the technical documentation that marks an important first step in improving water supply and road infrastructure. The handover was attended by Commissioner for Refugees and Migration Mr. Vladimir Cucić and Ms. Marija Peruničić from Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and representatives of public utility companies in Šid.
This activity is part of a wider project funded by the Government of Japan worth US$ 1,095,000, which is being implemented by UNDP. The Project aims to support the municipalities in Serbia accommodating a large number of migrants and refugees in order to enhance cohesion, improve public and municipal services and infrastructure, for the benefit of both locals and migrants.
Since the beginning of migration crisis in September 2015, more than 700,000 people transited through Šid on the way to their final destination. This municipality is currently the home for 2,000 migrants, which puts additional pressure on the communal and public service providers, such as health and social services, water supply, municipal waste collection, road maintenance etc. Until now, UNDP has provided the following support:
- In June this year, basketball and football courts of one of the oldest schools in Srem, in Adaševci (Šid municipality) were renovated. These sports courts have been a traditional gathering place for the youth, and as of this summer several matches have been played between the local and migrant teams. This support (value US$ 50,000) aims to improve cohesion between locals and migrants through sport.
- The General design and Preliminary Feasibility study for the improvement of the water supply system in Šid has been prepared (the value of the activity US$ 14,500)
- Design for the Roundabout at a square in Šid municipality has been prepared (value of the activity $US 13,500).
UNDP will continue to support the municipalities that are facing migrant crisis so as to strengthen local resilience and improve capacities of the local service providers.
