"Vašarište" Fairgrounds Renovated: The Future Center of Social Events in Kanjiža.

Dec 14, 2016

KANJIZA, December 14, 2016 – The local fairground and community meeting point “Vasariste” reopened today in Kanjiža. This location, used in 2015 as a temporary shelter for migrants, has now been renovated and is ready to host new public events, thus contributing to the Kanjiza’s tourism offer and local economic development.

"Renovation of the “Vasariste”" fairground was implemented within the “Enhancing Local Resilience to the Migration Crisis” Project", funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development USAID in the total value of $1.3 million”, said Jeff Skarin, Deputy Director of the Office for Democratic and Economic Growth of the USAID Mission in Serbia. The project, implemented by the United Nations Development Program UNDP, was launched in order to mitigate the negative effects of migration crisis by improving the waste management, community infrastructure and strengthening social cohesion in the municipalities on the migration route. In addition to the reconstruction of the “Vasariste” fairgrounds, an Asset Replacement Plan was developed for the local Public Utility Company (PUC) "Komunalac" in Kanjiza, in order to identify current priorities and key development needs of this PUC, which was under the biggest pressure during the migration crisis.

"With USAID support, and in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Government and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia, UNDP helps municipalities to enhance their vitality and be better prepared to face the current and future crises, for the benefit of all the people in local communities", stated Steliana Nedera, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative.

Besides the host, Kanjiza Mayor Róbert Fejsztámer, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Government Ivan Bosnjak and the representative of the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration of the Republic of Serbia also participated at the opening ceremony.

A presentation of the strategic plan for development of the “Vasariste" fairgrounds was organized at the Kanjiza City Hall, prior to the event. The plan anticipates the construction of an ice rink, kayak path and an area for horse racing, as well as organization of cattle fairs and other local and regional manifestations.

During the 2015 the Kanjiza municipality was one of the main transit and reception centers for migrants, with an estimated 150,000 people passing through, on their way to final destinations.
