600 Belgraders Went to Work "Just not by Car"

May 18, 2017

UN House team of 14 members commuted 100km on their way to work.

In today's challenge entitled Samo ne autom (engl. Just not by Car) a total of 600 employees from 50 companies / organizations took part and left their cars in the parking lot while opting to walk or cycle to work – and at the same time help protect the environment.

This competition was organized for the second time in Belgrade by cycling associations Bajsologija, Ulice za bicikle, together with Heinrich Böll Foundation and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with a goal to mobilize the corporate sector to turn, at least for a day, to sustainable means of transportation, and help protect the environment and reduce traffic. The challenge is funded by the GEF project within the framework of Climate-Smart Urban Development project, which is being implemented by UNDP.

This morning, employees who cycled and walked to work to New Belgrade across the Branko's bridge also had an opportunity to stop for breakfast and bike maintenance/servising at the Samo ne autom stand located on the corner of Bulevar Nikole Tesle and Bulevar Mihajla Pupina streets.

Samo ne autom challenge has also put the Sustainable Development Goals in action today: it contributes to Good Health and Wellbeing (Goal 3) it helps Sustain Cities (Goal 11) - all this through quality Partnerships (Goal 17).

The awards for the highest scoring and most ecologically aware employees and teams will be distributed next week in three categories for the highest scoring individual, for the highest scoring team (company) and for the company with most registered employees taking part.
