Reconstruction of the Red Cross Premises Facilitates Provision of Assistance to the Most Vulnerable

May 23, 2017

Kanjiza, May 23, 2017 - The renovated premises of the Red Cross in Kanjiza, ceremonially opened today, will facilitate the work of the RC's employees and more than 100 volunteers who provide assistance to the most vulnerable citizens and migrants residing in the municipality. Alongside the host, President of the municipality of Kanjiza Robert Fejstamer, the ceremony was attended by Bojan Stevic, State Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, representatives of the Embassy of Japan in Serbia, the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration and UNDP.

According to Tatjana Strahinjić Nikolić, Portfolio Manager at UNDP, "the design, refurbishment and extension of three warehouses for food supply, hygiene products and emergency, with a total value of USD 73,400, will enable the Red Cross to provide assistance more efficiently to people in need, regardless of who they are and where they are from."

Red Cross in Kanjiža is devoted to the protection of human lives and health, preventing diseases and improving health and social protection in the local community, as well as to the promotion of volunteerism and solidarity. Even before the migrant crisis, the Red Cross was providing meals for 110 users of the soup kitchen, which was very difficult without an adequate storage space. The new warehouse will facilitate the accommodation of food and hygiene products for both the existing and new beneficiaries.

The renovation is part of a broader financial support of the Japanese Government in the amount of USD 1,095,000, within which UNDP assists municipalities in Serbia experiencing a large influx of migrants and refugees, to strengthen unity, improve public services, utilities and infrastructure, for the benefit of the local population and migrants. Activities that support the local communities are being implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government and the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration, within the project "Strengthening Local Resilience in Serbia: Mitigating the Impact of Migration Crisis." In addition to the reconstruction of the Red Cross premises, last December, UNDP, with the support of the US Agency for International Development USAID, renewed "Vašarište", a gathering place for the local community and fairs in Kanjiza.
