Five municipalities in Serbia selected for participation in the Regional Program of Local Democracy in the Western BalkansNov 6, 2017
Five local governments in Serbia, namely Čačak, Šabac, Dimitrovgrad, Kragujevac and Paraćin, have been selected through a Public Call for Applications to participate in the Regional Program of Local Democracy (ReLOaD). These cities and municipalities, with the technical support of the ReLOaD project team, strengthen partnership between local governments and the civil sector, for the benefit of citizens and local communities. The Project focuses on introducing and sustaining a transparent funding of Civil Society Organization (CSO) projects by local government budgets, thus ensuring increased public participation in decision-making and improving the public services.
In Serbia, despite the existing legal obligation for local governments to ensure transparent CSO funding from the local budgets, there is often a lack of openness and clarity when it comes to the methods used for project ranking and selection, appointing members of the selection committees, adequate monitoring of project implementation etc.
The ReLOaD project team will work with selected cities and municipalities to tackle all these issues and ensure full transparency in future local CSO funding from the local budget.
Partner municipalities will be able to use grant funds in the amount of 500,000 EUR for funding of public benefit projects implemented by CSOs in the next two years. Special attention will be given to projects contributing to women empowerment, and strengthening of youth and socially excluded groups.
ReLOaD will support implementation of 200 CSO projects, expected to benefit 38.000 citizens in the Western Balkans region. In Serbia, over 20 CSOs will be engaged to improve the quality of life for over 3,000 citizens.
The Regional Program of Local Democracy (ReLOaD) implemented in the Western Balkans is funded by the EU and implemented by UNDP.
